Langkawi Part 1

17 December 2010

Yes, I'm splitting it into four posts. I tend to get distracted, and would prattle on about irrelevant things, thus making the posts so much longer than they should be. So there's absolutely no way I can cramp everything into a single, extra long post (which I'm sure no one will want to read).

Well, four is better than none.

(no, I don't like that song, so sick of it)

See, I have managed to type three short paragraphs which have nothing to do with Langkawi already. *rolls eyes*

Right. Better warn you first, there are a lot of photos. I'd say half of them are of the scenery and half of them are of our pretty faces. :P

Am going to dedicate this post to the beautiful Payar Island and only Payar Island, where we spent a good many hours before leaving for Langkawi. No underwater shots because I don't have the waterproof casing. Blah.

Okay. So, we boarded the ferry that would be taking us to the island around 8 o'clock in the morning. Typically, the ferry left late. We (being my two cousins and I) went up to the open-air deck to chat, to camwhore, to let the wind whip our hair back and forth (ha-ha), and to soak up some warm sunshine.

Left Penang feeling totally excited. Never quite noticed how beautiful our island is!

Wearing my mom's giant, squarish sunnies. Hate them, to be honest. But I didn't have the chance to go get a new one. Oh well.

Love my aunt's sunnies, which my cousin was wearing. ;)

Took off my gray cardigan once the sun came out. Haha. Wanted a tan!

Much to my cousins' (and pretty much all my friends') bewilderment.

There, these are the only two photos where you can see my guy-cousin's sleepy face, haha.

My girl-cousin and I swapped sunnies. :P

Do the waves look like trampled-on snow? :D

Okay, no. Haha.

So, after around 2 hours, we reached Payar Island! I have been there before a long time ago, can only recall myself kicking my legs furiously when I saw a great, longish fish approaching me. No idea what kind of fish it was. Longish. Maybe it was a barracuda HAHAHA.

These aren't exactly great photos. But just LOOK at the colour of the waters. I could stare at it all day and not get bored. I mean. It's such a perfect shade of turquoise. And everyone knows my favourite colour is turquoise. I always marvel at the colour of the Caribbean seas (you know, from the POTC movies, haha), but there's one such paradise, only 2 hours away from my home!

Okay, I'm sure the Caribbean AND many other places in the world have much more magnificent seas and coral reefs, but Payar is alright, I think. Not that I would know, because I'm completely under-travelled. I haven't even been to the other famous islands in my country. Poo.

There were SO many fish, and each of them was different! Not one of them shared the same, precise shade of blue on their fins. I think. Not that I could observe properly. Ha-ha.

Look at the last photo, one of the fish had aquamarine scales whereas the other's scales were more of a ... um, sapphire colour. Or maybe it was just an effect of light. And some of them were just plain green and yellow. Loved how their scales shimmered when they caught the sunlight!

Anyway I think the fish were very cute and kind of silly-looking, look at their eyes!

(Okay I just Googled the difference between FISH and FISHES. They were many different species of fishes in the sea, they just didn't appear in my photos, because most of the fishes were THIS type of fish. Ooh I'm confusing myself.)

Whey hey.

You might wonder why there were so many fish around us. Well, we ... uh, stole loads of bread from the buffet table and fed them to the fish. Don't think it mattered too much since one of the ... staff/employees/workers (totally have no idea what they do, as lifeguards maybe) also stole some sort of cake for the fish. HAHA. Some kids also did the same.

Feeding frenzy, lucky fish!! Or fishes? Arggh.

There were SO many fish yet we couldn't catch a single one. Major fail. Hahaha. But said 'staff-employee-worker-lifeguard' guy caught them very easily! He caught some and put them in my uncle's hands for us to admire and touch. But before I could touch the them they would have wriggled out of my uncle's grasp and flopped back into the sea. Poo.

Oops I'm babbling.

I (no, we) look hideous in the photos above, but! That's not the point.

Looook at the colour of the sea. *faints*

Ooh, do we look hot in lifejackets or what! Haha.

So, after an awful lunch we went ... uh, ashore? We were given the chance to swim with baby sharks. Okaaay, now that I think of it, I'm not sure whether they really were baby sharks or they were just a small breed.

There! Well, they swam very fast, so, not much chance of touching them or even having a glimpse of them when you were in the water.

The water was crystal clear (typical expression I know), and the sand was so smooth and fine, it felt really good between my scrunched-up-toes. There were no sharp rocks or pebbles to hurt our feet, instead, there were big fat sea cucumbers which you might accidentally step on.

Thankfully that didn't happen to me!

There you go. So fat. Those are my cousin's hands by the way. I daren't hold such a big one, held a much smaller one.

Was so worried that my twitchy hands would squeeze the sea cucumbers accidentally and they would then ooze all those sticky, slimy goo on my hands.

Thankfully that didn't happen to me!

My cousin experienced it once when he was little and told me about it, and how he cried because his hands were so sticky. Eew.

I look revolted. HAHA.

Sea cucumbers for lunch! Looked like a giant slug. Or something more disgusting.

(I look stupid, my eyebags are really horrible)

My aunt is very cute and nice!!

Haha what's a post without an embarrassing photo! Laugh all you want at my silly face in the first photo. Pooo.

It was soooo beautiful, the weather was brilliant! Sunny, but not too scalding, with a slight, pleasant breeze. The water was also perfectly warm.

Oh in case you're wondering, short that I am, my feet could totally hit the sandy bed of the sea. So, no I don't know why I was wearing the lifejacket. It wasn't exactly the most comfortable attire. Maybe I thought I looked hot HAHAHA.

Our swimsuits matched! :)

There, took off my lifejacket already! Phew.

In LOVE with the sea!!!

If only I know how to swim properly. Poo.

See, you could see everything, EVERYTHING through the clear water.

Even the stonefish! Camouflage fail. Hehe. Actually my cousin spotted it. I wouldn't have noticed, because I'm very observant like that. Lalalala.

Went on to the other beach after that!

Sooooo gorgeous. Even the rocks were nicer than the average rocks.

The beach wasn't as nice as the one just now, because THIS beach was completely covered with tiny sharp stones or hard, broken corals. A total pain in the ... feet.

BUT the coral reefs HERE were much nicer than the ones around the floating platform where we first swam, before we headed to the shore.

Hmm, I guess it was because the sea was deeper around the platform, and I couldn't really observe the anemones, fishes, urchins and stuff at a close distance. SINCE I don't know how to swim nor dive.

Still, spotted Nemo's adorable friends (not easily, mind you, they were so small and so deep down) swimming in and out of the anemones, looking as if they were having the time of their life. Also spotted a pretty angelfish, and we followed it for a long time until we got bored. Haha. Of course there were lots of butterflyfish too.

But on the other side, the sea was much shallower, and I could see the corals clearly. It was amazing. There was a whole ... spread, a whole large area of just one kind of coral (which I was totally worried my feet would get in contact with since it was kind of shallow), where loads of different types of fish dwelled. Small black ones with white spots, miniscule ones with electric blue stripes, and there were parrot fish too! Well, at least, we thought they were parrot fish. So brilliantly colourful, with blues and greens, fuchsias and purples, oranges and yellows. And they were kind of huge.

Haven't exactly finished exploring, but had to went back to the platform as we had to leave for Langkawi at 3.30 pm. So, went back, had a quick shower (no soaps or shampoo of course) and then, it was goodbye to Payar Island!

Started to camwhore once on the other ferry to Langkawi. Typical. Haha.

Was pretty tired at the time, from all the sun and swimming. Hey, it was still tiring even though I was wearing a lifejacket. The force needed to propel myself forward in the water, against the waves ... haha. Still, enjoyed myself thoroughly!!

Okay. That's all for this post. A big all. Haven't done long posts for a long time. And I think I rambled more than usual for this post. Oops.

Will update about Langkawi very soon!

Ta.
